It is operated and owned by MGM Resorts Int. Excalibur is named for the magic sword given to King Arthur, and the resort uses the legends of the Middle Ages in every possible way. The face and front are styled after the middle evil castle. Until 2007, a witch-style character representing the magician Merlin was used, and looked out from a high point of view. It has since been replaced by a Dick’s Last Resort character commercial.
Excalibur is located at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana. A pedestrian bridge connects the site to a neighboring casino. On the north end it is connected to New York New York, and in the east it is connected to Tropicana. This tram is free of charge which connects Excalibur to other MGM Resorts properties in the south, namely Mandalay bay and luxor.

The location where Excalibur lived was originally the site of the Xanadu Resort envisioned way back in 1975. The 1,730-room tropical paradise-themed resort has become Las Vegas’s first giant resort. Large projects were never built because the developer could not secure proper zoning by districts on the sewer structures required for such a large undertaking.
Excalibur is modeled after a theme resort strategy popular with casino hotel operators in the 1990s which includes the Las Vegas gambling experience combined with all the family-oriented elements as well. Then since 2006 many medieval-themed items and props have been removed due to four to five year renovation plans and modernization projects. As of 2010, only a few wall murals remain, as the Excalibur was updated to be much more modern and use far more understated elements than before, including contemporary artwork with furniture and flat-screen televisions in the hotel’s 2,000 recently renovated rooms. The 100,000 square foot gambling casino now consists of table games and over 1,200 machines. In addition to the casino space, the resort includes a newly renovated pool area, spa and fitness area of 13,000 square feet, eight restaurants, a fantastic food court, and of course the Chapel at Excalibur.
The hotel is the regular home for three shows, Thunder down under, The bee gees show, and the famous Kings Tournament. Thunder From Down Under did move to a hotel during July 2001 and is considered one of the best male strip shows in Las Vegas. In 2006, the show room was renamed Thunder From Down Under Showroom in honor of the show.
