Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, Nevada.

Mirage was built by renowned designer, and property developer Steve Wynn. Opened on November 22, 1989. Mirage is the first hotel built using a capitol raised by junk bonds. The building site, previously occupied by Castaways, was once the location of the Red Rooster Night Club. In 1980, Wynn, and a family friend, threw Roger Thomas on the idea of joining the team that designed the giant and grounded first-ever hotel and resort for Las Vegas in more than 25 years. It will be hotels, resorts and casinos far more sophisticated and glamorous than others in town.

The construction is also quite unique with Wynn having set a new standard for Las Vegas resort development. That’s why Wynn is widely considered the father of modern Vegas. Prior to the opening launch of Mirage, Vegas experienced a decline in activity that began in the 1970s, particularly around the time New Jersey legalized gambling. Tourists on the East Coast began to frequent Atlantic City casinos, and this gave Vegas a slides in revenue. Also at that time Vegas wasn’t considered a fashionable destination anymore, so a new, high-profile resort was needed to revive Vegas’s ailing resort and gaming industry. .

Concept Amenities and Mirage Hotel

To end the obvious confusion, Wynn purchased all rights to the Mirage name from La Mirage Casino and Mirage Motel. When it finally opened for business, The Mirage was the first resort and casino to use full-time cameras on all casino tables to catch scammers. From 1990 to 2003, Mirage hosted the extravaganza Siegfried and Roy. The two headliners mixed magic with a wild animal accompaniment, to wow the crowd. This event ended in 2003 because Roy Horn was seriously injured by one of the tigers they had used during the show.

Back during 1993, the Resort hosted the Cirque du Soleil long nouvelle Expérience show in a tent in the resort’s parking lot. It was right around this time period when Wynn decided to ask Cirque to make Mystère to go up and come up the Treasure Island resort next door. During 2004, Danny Gans held a marquee entertainment position, becoming the resort’s main attraction. This is the first Cirque du Soleil to be involved in the development of the venue, and is operated by The Light Group.

Mirage is a classic Vegas resort, and very much part of history.
